Maureen was a natural athlete and enjoyed playing tough athletic games. Her inherent ability to perform perfectly complemented the passion she had for sports. Her talent was exemplified by being the recipient of nearly every Feis award in drama or musical performances that her country could offer. Her acceptance was at the Abbey Theater by age 14 in which she explored her love of performing in classical and opera. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after seeing the Maureen screen examination. He was immediately captivated the beauty of her eyes. Laughton changed the name of Maureen FitzSimons to Maureen FitzSimons, to "Maureen O'Hara" that was a shorter form of her last name. The name change took place before Laughton decided to use her for Jamaica Inn. With a contract signed to Laughton the next film of Maureen's was scheduled to be shot within America (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1939)) with RKO Pictures. Maureen was able to purchase her contract from Laughton after the film was hugely successful. Maureen Laughton had appeared in two big motion pictures before she reached 19 years old.
